From May 1980 until September 1995, I actively and successfully gold mined on all three forks of the 40 Mile River in remote Alaska, near the town of Chicken. This is the story of how a 36-year-old woman, who was accustomed to living in cities, found herself face-to-face with few amenities, in a tent, for a summer, in what became the career of a lifetime. In a man's world. In a bear's world. Alaska. Gold.

A number of books have been written about gold mining on the 40 Mile River. Until now, none has been about the dredgers, which are the people who run the dredges. Here is a look at a modern method of gold extraction – the portable suction dredge, and the attendant lifestyle.

The 40 Mile River, located in remote Alaska, has been a hub for gold mining activities for decades. As a 36-year-old woman, I found myself embarking on a journey that would forever change the trajectory of my life. Leaving the comforts of city living behind, I immersed myself in the rugged and untamed landscape of the Alaskan wilderness, determined to conquer the challenge of gold mining.

Equipped with a portable suction dredge, I set out to explore the three forks of the 40 Mile River, a task that required navigating through a world dominated by men and the ever-present threat of bears. The dredge, a modern method of gold extraction, became my tool of choice, and the dredgers, the individuals who operated these machines, became my guides and companions in this remarkable adventure.

Over the course of 15 years, from May 1980 to September 1995, I dedicated myself to the art of gold mining, honing my skills and embracing the rugged lifestyle that came with it. Living in a tent, surrounded by the untamed beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, I found myself facing a world vastly different from the one I had left behind.

The stories of the dredgers, the individuals who shared this journey with me, have remained largely untold until now. While numerous books have been written about gold mining on the 40 Mile River, the experiences of the dredgers have often been overlooked. This narrative aims to shed light on this unique and captivating aspect of the gold mining industry, offering readers a glimpse into the lives and challenges of the people who operate the portable suction dredges.

Through my own personal account, I invite readers to step into the world of gold mining, to witness the triumphs and struggles that come with navigating the unpredictable terrain of the Alaskan wilderness. From the camaraderie forged among the dredgers to the ever-present threat of the bear-filled landscape, this story captures the essence of a life-changing adventure that has yet to be fully explored.

In a world where the pursuit of gold has captured the imagination of countless individuals, this narrative offers a unique perspective, shedding light on the modern methods of extraction and the individuals who dedicate their lives to this enduring quest. As you delve into the pages of this story, you will be transported to a world where the challenges of the elements and the demands of the industry converge, creating a tapestry of experiences that will leave a lasting impression.
